Project for paving and refurbishing the area surrounding the church in Bercianos de Aliste.
On behalf of the Town Council of San Vicente de la Cabeza, a proposal has been made for the paving and refurbishment of the area surrounding the Church of San Mamés in the town of Bercianos de Aliste, which belongs to that municipality in the province of Zamora. The proposal refers to the act of ‘desenclavo’ or ‘desenclavamiento’ (the removal of the nails), which forms part of the Good Friday celebrations in the aforementioned town.
The town of Bercianos de Aliste is one of the most characteristic centres of the unique Aliste region. It is also particularly well known for hosting one of the most historically and popularly rooted civic-religious celebrations in Castile and León and in Spain, events of enormous cultural and ethnographic value through which the population experiences the devotional and popular fervour of Holy Week. The events on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday have been declared Assets of Cultural Interest, as well as Regional Tourist Interest, by the Regional Government of Castile and León.
The square is the main stage for these events, where members of the brotherhoods, the rest of the town and visitors gather to witness and experience the Holy Week celebrations.
The project aims to finally culminate the dignification of these civic events through this final improvement to the public space, both in terms of its historical significance and its ability to offer better functionality to the area intended for public use.
